We caught up from with Julien Piegay from Singapore-based start-up Unravel Carbon.

‍

What do you do?

I'm the Australian and New Zealand Country Leader for Unravel Carbon. We’re a climate tech company headquartered in Singapore. We have an enterprise software and an agentic platform to help organizations track their emissions, meet their reporting requirements, and create a decarbonization pathway.

My role here is to lead the expansion in Australia. So I scale our footprint, and ensure we’re aligning headquarters strategy with all the local market requirements. I’m also the bridge with our partners, our clients, and with our headquarters as well.

What does your day to day look like?

I like to review the news — it’s fascinating to see all the projects around the world that’s happening. Then I’ll review my priorities and current initiatives. Basically my day is a mix of customer meetings, discussions with partners, or with industry body associations. I also catch up with the global team on things like go-to-market strategy and product roadmap. Sometimes it could be commercial, sometimes it’s more about educating and building trust.

What sort of changes have you been seeing in your space?

Firstly, the pace of the technology progress is crazy. Then there's the regulation. But what’s most exciting and I think plays a bigger role is the mindset shift of organizations, who are going from “we have to do it” versus “now we can grow through this.” So they see sustainability as a driver for innovation, for brand recognition, and for efficiency. That's where we see the shift. That’s really important because that's where it's becoming genuine, as opposed to being a tick box.

What do you like about your job?

It’s the conversations. When I’m navigating a complex problem with a customer, and they say ‘wow, this could turn into an opportunity’ — it’s those moments that are the most enjoyable.

How do you stay on top of the climate news?

The great thing is that we have sustainability consultants in the organization, and obviously they love to share their thoughts and knowledge. Fortnightly, every consultant brings some of the trends and explain it to the team. It energy related, it could be around technology, or circularity, it could be any topics that we think that's relevant for us to understand. It’s a very relaxed format. You bring in your lunch. You can ask any question, and say, ‘Hey, how does it relate to what we do in Australia?’  It's amazing because you see people present with a lot of knowledge and love.
